Short summary: “I think he’s going to be a strong and fierce lion like you.”
“What’s wrong?”
Levant turns his head away from his papers to look over at Irene after she gasped, but he’s soon reassured that everything is fine when he sees her smile and hears her laugh. Perhaps he is being oversensitive. Now that Irene is starting to show, people all around the castle have been talking, and the fact that in a few months he’ll be a father is…
Irene’s left hand is over her belly. She laughs again. “Oh, I think he kicked.”
“Kicked?”
Levant gets up from his chair and moves to sit down on the bed next to Irene. Irene takes his right hand with her left and places it on her belly. Levant doesn’t notice anything, but he’s not sure what to expect. He doesn’t know much about babies. He’s at least not too awkward around children, but with his patchy memory of his childhood due to the accident and the…experimentation… Oh! So that’s a kick?
“I think he’s going to be a strong and fierce lion like you,” Irene says with a grin.
Levant frowns. “Lion?” Strong and fierce? “Isn’t that more like Griek?”
Irene giggles as she leans against Levant. “Leon…”
Leon…lion… Only Irene and Axel use that name for him. He’s never really felt like a lion, though, not compared to the one beside him…
“I still think…” Griek is the one with the actual mane and the loud roar, right?
Irene laughs as she nudges Leon’s shoulder with her own. “Who’s the one I’m married to? The father of my son?”
Levant smiles sheepishly. Irene has always believed in him much more than he ever believed in himself. Well, if she insists… “I concede.”
Irene rewards him with a light kiss to his cheek. “As you should. Now help me get settled for bed.”
Levant takes a quick side glance at the window and at the dark, starlit sky. Once again, Irene knows best. He helps to prop her to her preferred position, moves the blankets around. He turns the lights off, pulls the covers over them. Yes, it is time for bed. To have a healthy, young “lion” of a son means getting proper rest now. He gives Irene a kiss to her forehead before settling in next to her. Yes, rest for the both of them. Everything else can wait until tomorrow.
With that thought, with Irene and their unborn son’s warmth next to him, he drifts off to peaceful sleep.
