Short summary: The first Saturday of the mouth means dinner with Kent’s parents.
It’s the first Saturday of the month, which means dinner at Kent’s. Or more specifically, dinner at his parents’ house with his parents ordering in the main dishes while Ikki and Anna bring over desserts. It’s simpler than trying to think of a new item to gift Kent’s parents each time, because they of all people are not lacking in anything they want. Except maybe for Kent to get married, but with the current situation… it’s a little complicated.
Anna, Ikki, and Kent live together. Anna is Kent’s girlfriend, but she is also Ikki’s girlfriend. Ikki is Kent’s boyfriend, but he is also Anna’s boyfriend. Formal institutions in Japan allow for the marriage of a man and a woman. Some prefectures also recognize same sex marriage. But none of these options completely represent what they are.
Kent tried to explain it to his parents once using simple math. The three of them are like an equilateral triangle. One dinner Kent will sit in the middle with Ikki and Anna on either side. Another dinner Anna is the one in the middle. And another dinner Ikki is the one in the middle. There is never a single point; not one side weighs more than another.
Well, it’s still confusing for Kent’s parents, but at least they don’t make judgmental comments. They treat Anna and Ikki well, and after dinner Anna always feels her stomach is bursting. Ikki, of course, always looks like he is perfectly fine, but Kent and Anna definitely have noticed how he eats a little less the following few days.
As for Kent… The reason he isn’t coming in now along with Ikki and Anna is simple. Kent works most of the day alone in his laboratory and goes straight to his parents afterwards. No matter how many sweet words Anna and Ikki use, Kent still needs that day for his work. His workaholic nature can only be tamed, not suppressed. But if Ikki or Anna hated it, this relationship wouldn’t work. They do get Kent all of Sunday, so...
“Anna, Ikki! Come on in already!” Kent’s mother greets Anna and Ikki with a big smile. “Today we ordered out from the Italian place.”
Kent swoops in from behind and plants a kiss on the cheeks of Anna and Ikki while snatching the box of desserts they brought. That’s more than enough to tell them he is in a good mood.
“Sit down, sit down!” Kent’s father shouts. “I can’t wait to start eating.”
“Yes, dear, you have been saying that for the past half hour.” Kent’s mother sighs. “I can’t imagine having to deal with two of that.”
Anna is unsure how to answer that, but Ikki comes up with something soon enough. “I don’t think Ken is ever that bad.” He adds a wink afterwards.
Kent groans. “Shut up, Ikkyu.” He shoves Ikki towards the middle seat. “Looks like you want to be in the middle tonight.”
The middle seat means getting the most attention from both of Kent’s parents. Last month that was Anna’s place. She’s secretly relieved that the choice has already been made. Meanwhile Ikki takes it in good stride.
“Well, tonight is Italian so…” He licks his lips. “I’ll have to agree with Father here that I can’t wait to start eating.”
Kent’s mother smiles. “Good! Because he ordered a lot…”
Maybe Ikki will end up regretting a little being in the middle seat and eating too much food. Maybe Anna and Kent will give Ikki a little extra affection when the three get back to their apartment to help him feel better. But that’s something to worry about later. Right now there is a delicious-smelling dinner and plenty of food, smiles, and conversation to go around.
