Short summary: Delta and Casty and a campfire at night.
There is something serene about this situation, where it is just Cass, Delta, and a horse and nothing else breathing anywhere in sight.
Sure, Delta feels small and insignificant compared to this grand expanse. But he is sick… Sick of cramped places, sick of crowds, sick of so much noise and stimulation.
Sick of fighting.
Delta just wants to take a rest. He senses that Cass feels the same way. They don’t actually spend that much time talking but when they ride, she holds him tightly, and her warmth is comforting. She has always been an anchor, even when he was lost. Without her…
“I feel like I can go anywhere as long as I have you.”
The sentiment slips out of his mouth while he’s tending the fire. Being the first thing said to break a long period of silence makes Cass raise an eyebrow. It takes her a moment to respond.
“…I should be the one saying that.”
The quiet admission makes Delta smile. “I know. But you would never say it first.”
It’s always fun to poke at Cass’ mannerisms, once Delta understood what they were. Of course, she can always get him back for his obliviousness. Which does often.
But right now she smiles in return, softly. “You’re right.”
Cass moves in closer and Delta takes her into his arms. They sit down together, Cass in Delta’s lap, and watch the flames in the darkening sky. The moon is beautiful tonight. Maybe it has been many nights, but right now Delta feels that to be truer than ever.
He could say more words, tell her how much they are on the same page and how happy that makes him feel. But just holding her like this conveys this sentiment well enough. Two people, alone in the expanse, free to just be together.
There’s no one else Delta would want to be with, just like this.
