Short summary: It’s that time of year, so Mayuri is in the garden picking off caterpillar eggs. A classmate finds that interesting.
“Unusual to see you here. What are you doing?”
Mayuri looks up from the vegetables at her visitor, a classmate that she isn’t particularly close with. Someone in the craft club? Mayuri knows her presence is a curiosity to many at Saint Angraecum after being absent from classes for months during their first year, but she supposes that people did remember her penchant for baking and art. Yes, she is not normally out in the garden unless assigned, but this is a necessary task. It’s that time of year.
Mayuri shrugs. “Picking off caterpillar eggs to prevent a caterpillar infestation.”
“Ah, yes. That can be bad.” The girl nods but then looks over at the bucket of soapy water that Mayuri has been dumping all the eggs into. Her eyes widen. “Wait, all of them?”
Mayuri’s lips curl up a bit. “All of them.”
The girl frowns. “Don’t they turn into butterflies?”
“Yes.” Mayuri would laugh at the girl stating the obvious, a sign that she is trying to put the pieces together but not getting the other obvious reason, but laughing at that would probably be inappropriate.
“But…”
The girl’s protest is interrupted by a new visitor. “Ah, Mayuri-san. How is the picking going?”
Mayuri smiles for real. Rikka’s timing is unexpectedly good. “Almost done.”
Rikka smiles in return. “Great! Suoh-san will be happy. She is almost done too, so if you want to see her after you’re done here…”
“Of course.” Rikka being here means that Suoh must be the only one in the Council of Nicaea room. Perfect. “Good work too, Rikka.”
“Just make sure to remember that dinner is in an hour.”
Mayuri just gives Rikka a nod before Rikka leaves. She looks over the leaves, not spotting any more caterpillar eggs. Of course she’ll come back and check again tomorrow and over the next few days, in case she missed any or if some new ones appear. A fight against bugs is rarely simple, at least according to all the media Suoh has shared with her, but with effort things can be solved. Of course Mayuri isn’t doing anything like a protagonist of an action movie, but…
“Wait.”
Mayuri cocks her head at the girl who had remained while Mayuri had finished her business. The poor girl just doesn’t get it, does she? Mayuri decides she’ll make the final connection for her.
“Suoh hates butterflies.”
She stands up, picks up the bucket, and makes her way back to the school building. She’ll dump this down the drain, wash her hands and face, and then pay Suoh a visit. They won’t have too much time alone together, but enough to…
“Huh?”
Mayuri chuckles to herself as she hears the girl shout, finally making the last connection. Yes, the things Mayuri will do for love are… varied to say the least. But no task is too small to be done, not when it helps her beloved Suoh.
