Short summary: Aoko and Alice go out for dinner. It triggers some of Aoko's musings.
It’s been quiet lately in Misaki City, enough that even Alice is amenable for a trip outside the mansion for fun. It’s been a while since the two of them have dined out. It’s sort of on a whim that they chose a Western restaurant, but a new place with no crowd and a discount for dining in is enough to hook the two of them in. Aoko wouldn’t say the food is good, but the atmosphere is fine. There is some light music in the background which is inoffensive enough, and it seems perfectly fine to eat their respective plates of pasta without conversation. That’s not normally their style anyway. Importantly, Aoko is granted the opportunity to observe Alice in dim but not too dark lighting. It adds a romantic atmosphere that makes Alice look pretty…
Yeah, not going there. Aoko is here to indulge, not to think. Yes, she’s not going to think about how her feelings for Alice have become deeper, complicated. Because she’s pretty sure Alice’s feelings are not as deep or complicated. Her indulging means splurging on a slice of chocolate cake, even if it probably won’t be any better than the pasta.
“That’s my piece.”
“What? That’s definitely on my half of the slice.”
It’s one piece to share – one piece and two forks. After a relatively pleasant dinner… Of all things to fight over, it’s this piece of crappy chocolate cake? Then again, it’s…very much them. They are still teenagers, even if Alice is less human than Aoko. They are budding magicians currently working together, but in the future, inevitably…
“Aoko.”
“I’m right.”
When they are enemies in the future, Aoko will need to stand her ground. She may have budding affection for the person across the table from her, but she always wants to win. Big things and small things. Mage battles and pieces of cake.
“Hmph.”
They’ll fight, together and against each other. Every day, every week, every month, every year. But no matter what happens here, at the end of the day, they’ll still be headed back to the same place. Drawn together, hopefully, by a shared destiny…
“Alice!”
“Too slow.”
But it doesn’t mean Aoko won’t have to fight every bit of the way.
