Short summary: Nowadays Edward has time to think about things (Capell) he couldn’t while they were still fighting.
Sometimes Edward wakes up in the middle of the night and wonders why he, of all people, is King of Burgusstadt.
And not Sigmund. Not Capell. Although Capell as a king would have been disastrous, at least he can look the part. Those two changed history, while Edward…lost to his lunaglyph, his "superpower", and has become incredibly ordinary. Which is probably why Kiriya argues with him every day.
He and Kiriya both have loved and lost, and yet both persevere, waiting and hoping. Kiriya has a better chance of regaining his loved one, for at least Savio is still on the same planet.
Capell is…
Edward could have said something before their parting but didn't. He could have been more like Aya but he chose differently, because he knew the sentiments would have been rejected. He understood already after Sigmund, and while Capell isn't Sigmund, at the same time…
Edward had loved Sigmund like a god. For some reason he knew but couldn’t understand Sigmund as mortal, human. That’s why he couldn't accept Capell as Sigmund's…anything. Replacement, successor, whatever. Of course it was never fair to make Capell be Sigmund's replacement, not even by Sigmund himself. Instead, Edward eventually did accept Capell, but as Capell.
Edward had loved Capell like a man, a brother in arms, a friend. It didn't become anything more because there was always something else to think about, something else to worry about. And now, when there are still things to do but not the same type of urgency, Edward finally thinks about it. About possibilities.
About how he would welcome Capell back. The hug he would initiate, the pat on his back. the smile he would give, the first words. "Welcome home, feel free to stay as long as you like" or something like that. Maybe he would present Capell with a new flute to play, in a new case. Capell could be the traveling bard he joked about becoming. Certainly Edward wouldn't make demands, and if Capell went to Aya…
Well, that's okay. Capell's return is the first step. Still, Edward plans to confess. Having a chance to do so… Now that he is an ordinary man, Edward will not bank on second chances. He doesn’t care about his pride, his ego, not with this…
But first, he should go back to sleep. If it means one day closer to Capell's return…
