"Coming!"
Kuroko had been fixing the leash to the harness around Nigou when the doorbell rings. He's able to get Nigou to sit still before opening the door to the unexpected sight of his tall and grumpy grey-haired boyfriend.
"Mayuzumi-san?" There had been no communication from Mayuzumi before coming over…wait, there was a missed LINE message. From about 10 minutes ago. Kuroko bows his head slightly. "I'm sorry, I didn't see your message."
Mayuzumi shrugs. "I happened to be nearby." He looks over at Nigou who lets out a small bark. "So you're taking him out."
"Yes, it's time for his afternoon walk." Kuroko claps his hands, signaling for Nigou to come to his side. "Join me?"
Mayuzumi's mouth makes a few motions before letting out a grumble. "Why do I have to go back out in this shitty weather?"
Kuroko shrugs. "You want to spend more time with me."
Mayuzumi looks away but doesn't deny Kuroko's assertion. He just fiddles with his scarf before exiting back out the front door. Once the door closes, Kuroko lets out a small laugh and gives Nigou a pet under his chin.
"Shall we go? Let's not keep Mayuzumi-san waiting."
Kuroko makes sure his own scarf is fitted properly around his neck before opening the front door and heading out. He shivers; the wind is certainly strong compared to normal. Nigou too shakes, the metal of his leash making a clanking sound.
"To the park?"
Kuroko laughs as Mayuzumi walks ahead, Nigou chasing after him. It's been like this since they started going out a few months ago. Rather short-notice visits with unexpected moments of kindness and empathy. Mayuzumi is actually pretty soft-hearted, but his pride doesn't let him express it well. He's also rather needy but expresses that slightly better, albeit through actions more than words. Perhaps that's why Kuroko is a good partner for Mayuzumi, when one puts aside their incompatibility on the basketball court. Because he's good at reading Mayuzumi's actions when Mayuzumi doesn't want to use words. As for what Mayuzumi gives him…
"Yeah. The one by the cafe."
"You like their vanilla latte."
"Will Mayuzumi-san buy one too?"
"…Sure."
Mayuzumi gives Kuroko comfort, warmth, sweetness…despite his bitter base. He's really like the human personification of a vanilla latte, a drink that Kuroko took some time to adjust to, compared to his immediate love for a vanilla shake. But on cold days like today, there's nothing else he would rather have in hand… There is no other hand he rather hold with his own.
The best part is that Kuroko doesn't need to use many words either to get what he wants, what he needs. Mayuzumi has already paused his walk, allowing Kuroko to catch up, with his left hand outstretched. Even through gloves, a very human warmth is transmitted once Kuroko links his right hand with Mayuzumi's left. In this little venture, they are joined, they are partners.
"Stop smiling so creepily."
Yes, they are just taking Nigou out on a walk. Yes, they are just making a short trip to a cafe to get vanilla lattes to go. Yes Kuroko often does both of these things by himself. But with Mayuzumi indulging him, in this "shitty" weather… How could Kuroko not smile about it?
"I love you, Mayuzumi-san."
"Let's just hurry to the cafe already."
How could Kuroko not laugh about it? Mayuzumi, despite turning his face away, cannot hide the red that tints his ears at Kuroko's declaration. So cute… Kuroko would kiss him…if they weren't out in public, and if they weren't taking Nigou around. He'll be good…and reward Mayuzumi properly later, once they return home…
(Later, Kuroko giggles in between the light kisses he presses against Mayuzumi's neck, because the LINE message Mayuzumi had sent earlier had just been…a house emoji. Well, Kuroko supposes he had been home at the time…)
