Short summary: Susato sometimes wishes she were someone else, but then Haori makes her feel she’s fine as she is.
Sometimes Susato wishes she was born into a different body, had a different face, a different name and different background. It doesn’t help that one time she had dressed as “Ryuutaro” and did what she couldn’t do as the “normal” Susato, defend her best friend and beloved one from crimes she had not committed. Those around her called it a moment of bravery, but Susato had been so scared of losing Haori and just couldn’t trust anyone else around (because Naruhodo-san was in England and Kazuma-sama was still lost) to save Haori.
Yes, Haori is always calling Susato brave and strong, dashing like a knight in shining armor, but when times are tough, Susato is the one who needs Haori to hold her hand, to tell her everything will be alright. Even after the case had been won, even after Haori was most definitely proven innocent, Susato needed to hold Haori’s hand. She almost wanted to take it with her back to London; that’s how scared she had felt.
But Haori, with a wide smile, gave Susato the confidence she needed. Haori always gives Susato the confidence she needs. “There are things that only you can do,” she told Susato then. “Everything will turn out alright.”
It only made Susato eager to return home, once the business in London is concluded, even though she was happy to reunite with Naruhodo-san and Mr. Holmes and Iris. And Kazuma-sama… Naruhodo-san even teases Susato about the smile she wears that doesn’t falter even for a moment.
Rather it only grows when they get off the boat and step foot in Japan. Susato hears Haori before she sees her, but it’s enough. Susato might have had doubts recently about her body, her status, her place in society. But when Haori comes running over to embrace Susato tightly, maybe, Susato thinks, she is happy with who she is after all.
