It's not the first night back in this room, in this bed, and yet Mayuri finds herself awake in the middle of the night. Not due to a bad dream or a good one or anything at all. Really, there is no reason she should be awake right now but yet… She hears rustling of sheets above. Maybe…
"Suoh?"
She whispers like it's a secret wish. It wouldn't be a problem if it were Rikka instead, just…preferable if it is Suoh.
"Mayuri!"
It is Suoh who is awake. Mayuri can't help but smile even if this means Suoh too was having trouble sleeping. It just feels like another small sign that their hearts are…aligned.
"Can I come up?" she asks quietly, cognizant that Rikka is in the room too, hopefully still asleep.
A moment passes, with some more sheet rustling. "Yes."
Mayuri makes her way carefully into Suoh's bunk. It takes a minute, a heartpounding minute. But the smile that greets her soothes her heart, telling her without words needed that she is welcome, she belongs here.
She embraces Suoh gently. "Why are you awake?"
Suoh returns her gesture and Mayuri could just drown in that warmth forever. "It still doesn't feel real." Suoh's fingers are so light as they trace lines on Mayuri's back. "You being here."
"I see…" Mayuri also doesn't feel like this is real. That she could come back to Suoh and feel Suoh's warmth once more. But how she feels is nothing compared to how Suoh feels. "Suoh, I'm sorry."
Because she made the choice to leave Suoh. She made Suoh search desperately for her, because she couldn't reveal the truth. It all worked out…for now, but…
"It's okay, Mayuri." Suoh tightens her hold around Mayuri. "Just stay by my side."
"I will." Mayuri returns the gesture, the answer simple and clear.
