Short summary: Suoh feels ever farther from her goal, but if she gives up...
Midnight strikes and like Ashenputtel her time is up. Suoh better go to bed now or she'll regret it in the morning.
Even though Suoh isn't one bit closer to Mayuri. Instead she feels one step farther. She isn't sure why, but she believes if she doesn't save Mayuri before the school year is up, she won't ever save her.
"Mayuri, why…"
One side asks "why are you giving up" while the other asks "why aren't you giving up". Suoh hears words in her head, in her own voice, in her stepmother's voice, in Yuzuriha's voice, in Rikka's voice. Suoh knows it's frustration, building frustration from not having enough time or clues, that she hears voices in her head. Voices sounding troubled, desperate, despairing. Mayuri's voice carried those same tones when they have conversed, through walls, in brief words. Taken at face value, Mayuri is asking Suoh to give up. Taken at emotional value, Mayuri is asking Suoh to save her.
And when things get tough… When people get in the way…
But Suoh has this feeling, that if she does give up now, she'll never fully be at peace with that decision. It may be hard, it may hurt, friends and classmates may judge her, but still she will…
