Short summary: Church bells reminds Marie of a day, and she looks at her ring...
The faint sounds of ringing church bells make Marie pause in the midst of writing her log for the day, cause her to strain her ears. Is that the same as…no, not quite. While the sounds are still lovely, they aren’t the same sounds that she heard that day, some five years ago.
Marie lets out a quiet laugh as she thinks back to that time. Oh what a wild day it was, culminating with the two of them, freshly graduated from high school but still so young at heart, making passionate promises of a future forever together. Of course it was a bit rushed, so it takes Ryota some time to actually gift Marie the engagement ring that adorns her finger currently, but Marie doesn’t mind. She wouldn’t have cared if Ryota asked her to marry him at a later date; she would have waited for him. But that day was clearly their day of destiny, with the bells of that church behind the school ringing for the first time since their initial parting as children. With the church door that normally wasn’t open being opened for the first time in years.
With the fact that Ryota flew back to Japan that very day just for that moment.
Ryota isn’t a man to do anything in half steps, and sometimes his pace is overwhelming. But Marie wouldn’t want any other man to spend the rest of her life with. Even if he still takes great joy in teasing her often… That’s still okay. She’s learned how to make him earn that apology in a way that makes them both happy…
“Marie?”
Marie blinks and looks up. Her heart warms at the sight of her fiancé. “Ryota!”
She hadn’t realized how lost in thought she was until Ryota’s voice startled her. And apparently while lost in thought she had raised her left hand as if to admire the ring on her finger, a ring and a finger that soon is brought up to Ryota’s lips.
“I’m back,” Ryota says after kissing Marie’s hand. “Did you miss me?”
Marie smiles. “Of course.” She cups his face and gently brings his head down towards hers. He obliges and allows her to bring their lips together. “My future husband.”
“My future wife,” he replies before initiating the next meeting of their lips. Her hand slides into his hair, a little longer than that day a few years ago, while his hands grip onto her shoulders. It stabilizes him in this otherwise awkward position of him bending over the table to reach her. But she knows from other experiences that he would bend over all types of things in order to reach her, in order to kiss her… And she would too…
But not right now. She drops her hand once they break apart for air and uses it to push him back a little. He releases his grip on her shoulders as she stands up.
“Shall we make dinner now?” she asks as she fixes her blouse. “I can make soba—”
“Later,” Ryota replies, coming around the table to grab onto Marie’s arm. “There’s something else I would like right now.”
“What is it?” Marie asks, already knowing the answer as he guides her towards their bed. “An appetizer?”
“Yes,” he says as she lays down on the bed and he on top of her, pressing her into the mattress, but gently. “One serving of Marie, please,” he requests, his lips curling into a sly smile.
Marie giggles as she reaches for the top button of his collared shirt. “Understood, future husband.”
