Short summary: Milly and Sagi have settled into a predictable rhythm.
The light flickers, and Milly takes a moment to relight the lamp with a flame magnus. Huh, it seems she’s run out again. She’ll have to ask Sagi to collect some more for her tomorrow.
How many weeks has it been already since they’ve moved to Balancoire? How many weeks have they had this peaceful life, allowed to just be Milly and Sagi, wife and husband, without worry?
After spending so many weeks together constantly by each other’s side, it has taken a little time to settle into this new rhythm. Milly wants to write down their adventures so that they wouldn’t forget them, wouldn’t forget the sacrifices of people they loved. Sagi, though, isn’t one to sit still, so he is soon helping out around town. This means when Milly is about to write down something interesting or funny, she wants to talk to Sagi immediately, except he isn’t there to hear it. Only Guillo’s head, eerily silent, is her constant company. She does talk to Guillo sometimes when she can’t hold herself back, but without Guillo’s biting retorts it isn’t too appealing.
Milly doesn’t just write down their history. She also writes letters to Gena, letting her know how they are doing. Gena always replies with how happy she is to hear from Milly, since Sagi was never the best at keeping contact or letting her know what was going on. She also sends Milly some recipes and some advice for cooking, since Milly wants to make food that Sagi likes. Sure, there’s no need for Milly to learn how to cook, but growing up the only daughter of Baelheit, she had been treated like a princess in both a safe but restrictive way, and there are many things she wants to learn now that she’s her own person, free of said titles and restrictions.
Life has settled into a rhythm of predictability, but Milly finds that this predictability isn’t always a bad thing. Maybe last time life was predictable, it had been a boring shuffle of escorting from one place to the next. She could go to school but she could only attend the lectures. She never had friends, never felt like she had anyone besides her father, never could trust but only could distrust and lie, until she met Sagi and wanted to change.
Now predictability is waking up together, heading into the kitchen to see what is for breakfast before rousing a groggy Sagi from the bed. Predictability is seeing Sagi off with a smile knowing she’ll be welcoming him back home in a few hours. Predictability is having someone by her side when she needs him most. Predictability is falling asleep together, Sagi holding her close, warm and securely, under the blankets.
“I’m back, Milly.”
Milly looks up from her letter and smiles. She doesn’t need to finish this letter right now. “Welcome home, Sagi.”
She stands up and takes a step toward Sagi. He takes two steps towards her. They meet in the middle and he takes her hand. “Milly, do you want to go see something interesting?”
“Yes.” Milly should probably go outside anyway, stretch out her limbs. She pulls on Sagi’s hand and tugs him out of the room, enjoying the way he squeezes her hand back. To be honest it doesn’t matter if Sagi has found something interesting or not. It doesn’t matter if it’s a new sight or the same thing for the 1000th time. If Sagi invites her somewhere, Milly will go. She knows it’s the same for Sagi.
It doesn’t matter if this is predictable. If she’s happy, if Sagi’s happy... Is there truly anything better?
