Akira opens his eyes, slowly.
He’s in bed, his normal bed. There is no bright morning light or even glaring fluorescent light. Only the soft glow of moonlight illuminates the room and the orange-haired man sitting at the table with paper and paintbrush.
“Sorry if I woke you.”
“You didn’t.” Akira’s dream had no relation to Yukihito directly. Unless Yukihito too was woken up by memories from Toshima.
“You know…” Yukihito stands up, moves to sit on the bed beside Akira, takes his hand. The warmth chases the headache from the dream away.
“I had hoped I was mistaken. That you not remembering meant you weren’t that Akira. Even though I knew I was the only one who remembered the experiments.”
“Yukihito…” Akira wants to say something, but he doesn’t know what to say. He didn’t know… he can’t remember when they erased it all from him.
“But now I wouldn’t wish you to remember.” Yukihito squeezes Akira’s hand. “It’s enough that you are here, that you can listen, that you can know.”
Akira squeezes Yukihito’s hand in return. He wishes Keisuke could know too. That Keisuke too could be… here. Keisuke is that subject they continue to skirt around. Akira is pretty sure it is his fault but… Yukihito would never allow Akira to take the blame. The old system broke them, and they are just two broken people doing their best to…
“Go back to sleep.” Yukihito climbs over Akira, slides under the blankets, tucks Akira against his body.
“Yeah…”
