“Salty or sweet?” Asuka had asked one afternoon as she scrolled through various lists of best simple baking recipes. Usually Shiori was the one who did more of the cooking, but Asuka was in the mood to make something for her wife who had been busy lately with her student’s homework.
“How about both?” Shiori replied, not looking up from the pile of essays.
Thus, sea salt caramel. That was currently the flavor that Asuka was making everything – the hot chocolate they drank in the morning, the tea in the afternoon, the cookies after dinner. She should probably be sick of the flavor already, but the mixture of salty and sweet hit the right balance.
And it reminded her of their first kiss. That kiss hadn’t come at an ideal time or an ideal place; they had just found out that Shiori hadn’t earned the scholarship to join Asuka to study in America. It had been disappointing, frustrating… With the salty breeze and the tears that ran down Shiori’s cheeks, Asuka had kissed Shiori and promised that everything would be turn out fine. They might be separated for a bit, but Asuka would come back to her. Besides, Shiori was always free to visit, anytime.
10 years later everything was more than fine.
“What are you thinking about?” Shiori asked as she grabbed a sea salt caramel chunk cookie off the plate and took a bite.
Asuka smiled. “Nothing.”
Shiori laughed. “You know you can’t fool me, right?”
Instead of speaking, Asuka swept in and captured those lips, tasting the bits of sea salt caramel and giving Shiori the answer.
