Short summary: Rena feels everything is like a dream.
“Did you see that? I made it from all the way over here!”
“Yeah! That was awesome! You got this, Yuki!”
Rena watches as Yuki and Ao shoot basketballs at the hoop in the gymnasium, running around, yelling, and giving each other high-fives. Rena, though, stays at the sidelines. Despite her height and her natural athletic ability, Rena has never been interested in sports. In contrast Yuki is short but super interested in sporting activities. She knows it’s about celebrating being alive at her fullest, for she knows death.
Rena knows death, but from a far distance, from the outside. Of course she too wants to live a good life and spend her time with Yuki well, but maybe because she’s never felt that disease, she doesn’t have that…fear? Or fearlessness? Either way, she doesn’t understand it, but…
For her it’s most important to support Yuki, to love her and be loved. She’s not going to fake an interest in sports but she’ll have water ready for Yuki to drink, and a towel to wipe her face, and maybe join her in the pool afterwards. She’ll let Yuki rest her head in her lap or against her shoulder, brush her hair, hum her a lullaby… So Yuki can continue to play sports and live life to her fullest, and be Rena’s shining light.
